The Cal defense, of all things, led to the Cal offense scoring.
But it still wasn’t enough to give the Bears a lead at halftime. UCLA went 95 yards in one minute and four seconds just before the end of the first half to take a 24-14 lead over Cal. Bruins’ running back Paul Perkins scored on a 49-yard screen pass to finish off the last-minute drive.
Both of Cal’s two touchdowns were started with the Cal defense forcing a fumble.
The first came on a scramble from UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley. Cal defensive back Trey Cheek knocked the ball loose and linebacker Hardy Nickerson picked it up and ran 27 yards to the 18-yard line. Cal scored four plays later on a three-yard rush from Daniel Lasco.
The second came when Nickerson punched the ball out of UCLA running back Paul Perkins’ hands. Cal defensive back Cedric Dozier recovered the loose ball on 20-yard line. The Bears scored five plays later this time with quarterback Luke Rubenzer throwing a six-yard pass to receiver Chris Harper, who caught the ball with one hand.
Cal quarterback Jared Goff is 12-for-18 this half with 105-passing yards.
UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley is 19-for-25 with 234-passing yards and two touchdowns.
The Bruins are out gaining Cal 363-to-144.
UCLA will get the ball first in the second half.
